New Standards

Picture
Have you heard the news? Kindergartners will be facing tougher math standards starting next year! The good news is that we are doing many of the additional "requirements" in our classroom already. However, with the bar raised and your child having more accountability it is even more important to continue working at home together! We have begun the 3rd marking period already below find a list of the requirements your child needs to master this quarter.

Count to 100
Count backward for 20
Read numbers to 30
Write numbers to 50
Count to 100 by 10
Names penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar
Create a 3 part pattern
Verbilize addition and subtraction stories
Measures with ruler and other nonstandard items

Calendar Numbers

Starfall.com, Where children have fun learning to read!
Every morning we used Starfall.com to complete the calendar. It is a great website for beginning reading and it is FREE! So we use it every day. Everyday it asks you to fill in the missing day and date as well as mark any special days. I have noticed that some children have been having trouble recognizing teen and higher numbers. So take some time with your child to review numbers. Ask them to find a specific number and see how they do. Report cards will be written this week and the children are expected to read and write numbers up to 30. A calendar is a fun way to practice this skill.

ps. if you child still needs letter sounds check them out while you are there or practice reading the little stories and play the reading games...enjoy!

Tasty Tuesday

Every week at Tasty Tuesday we have a great story, lesson, activity and then treat planned for the kids to enjoy. This week we played a game of "sightword" snowball fight where the kids practiced reading their words by choosing a "snowball" reading the word and tossing it to the other side. Then they made snowflakes out of marshmallows and pretzels. Here is a quick clip of them in action, enjoy!

The Disappearing Train

Today during math centers we played a really great game from our math series called: Disappearing Train. This game is always a huge hit. The game is very simple and you can play at home to help build basic math skills. I have uploaded a video (just click the link) of me giving the game directions to the kids I also added another video of them playing the game. So try it at home and enjoy the videos!

Numbers and the 100th day!

Numbers, numbers everywhere! It is getting closer to the 100th day of school. It is hard to believe but this is a major milestone in kindergarten. We have been preparing since the very first day of school and will continue to do so until the big day (mid-February) The kids (and you) will be asked to decorate a shirt with 100 things! So start your creative minds now. More information will be sent home very soon!

Meanwhile I hope to keep adding more videos from my FlipCamera, I hope you have enjoyed the first 2!

Keep working on number writing, I am seeing a lot of backward numbers still. Also practice counting by 1, 5's and 10's. I have some links below for a couple counting songs we are singing in class.
