Another Project! (I have been busy today!)


One of the things I struggle with when having my students working on "Daily 5" is accountability. I don't have a listening center so I use the classroom computers when the children are "listening to reading." We use the amazing websites bookflix, storyline online or my youtube playlist of books (find it by clicking HERE or on my Pinterest page.)

But after the students listened to a story they started playing around on the computer, or I noticed them not watching a whole book and spending the time clicking away. On Pinterest I found a great worksheet, easy and concise for students to fill out after they finished listening to a story. The problem? I couldn't find it to print it anywhere. So.....I created my own! I love when other teachers/bloggers share printables so I try to pay it forward and share too. Note** Sometimes when uploading to google docs, now called google share, the font doesn't turn out correctly so let me know if you have any problems.

Christmas List

We have been working on writing lists of things. Today we wrote lists of Christmas Words. Our "kid-writing" (sounding out words) has really begun to grow. The children wrote all of their words independently!

Here are a few pictures of some of their work:

 I have uploaded the worksheet if anyone would like to use it at home for more practice(parents) or in your classroom (teachers.) It's not fancy but it saves time, which we all could use at this time of year!

First Day Treat

Mail Day

I am back from vacation and today I sent my Official Welcome Back to School letters out to each student in my class ($10.00 in postage!....the post office is killing me!) But I love to do it each year, there is something special about sending that letter and getting excited about a new school year.

My welcome back envelope is packed full of information and goodies so I thought I would share for the teachers out there looking for new ideas. Of course there is my official welcome to school letter. You can download and read it HERE.

Next a quick information sheet about what kindergarten orientation will be like and what to expect. It also has a few reminders about buying supplies.

Next a letter written by a student from my past year's class. It is a form letter that I have each child fill in at the end of the year. They turn out so cute and I think they are really fun to send to the new students.I thought I had a copy to share but it seems to be missing I will upload it as soon as I can!

I add in my business card, always a nice for the parents to have handy.

Finally I add in some "Ready Confetti" a take on Jitter glitter that i read about on teachers.net. I create colorful confetti that they can sprinkle under their pillow the night before school tho help them sleep soundly and be ready for their big first day as a kindergartner. I have a few tricks up my sleeve still some magic playdoh, cookies for the parents, and cupcakes for the first day of school but that will be a post for another day.

Morning Mantra

I've been thinking a lot about mantra's. Something that could be similar to a class moto but also something that would really "stick" with them as we begin every day. My principal has certain things she says every day over the announcements such as: "Today and everyday be your shining star best." The kids do catch on and I hear them repeating it at times. Does it hold meaning for them, I'm not sure, but it think it is worth the effort.

Each day as I do attendance, I don't just call out their names or even have them move a stick. I say "Good morning" to each individual student every day. "Good Morning Suzie...Good Morning Mrs. Giglio" it lets kids know that I appreciate that they are there each day, that they are individuals but also that I care about each of them and they are special to me. Along the way it teaches respect, manners, and class number order.

As we come to the carpet each morning I say "good morning kindergarten" they always reply, "good morning Mrs. Giglio." so I was thinking of adding in a short little mantra to say each morning as we begin. It may be tweaked a bit as time goes on but here is what I have so far:

Today will be a great day.

I will respect Mrs. Giglio.

Mrs. Giglio will respect me.

I will try my best in everything I do.

I will be a good friend.

Today will be a great day.

Lego Math

I  came across this great lego math idea from The Kent Chronicles and put it in a word document to use in the classroom. If you would like a copy click HERE. I think the boys especially will love it and I can even see them making their own after!
