Daily 5 Day 1

Today was our first day in our "daily 5" centers. Daily 5 is a literacy program that encourages reading in a variety of ways to meet each students learning needs and style.

In the beginning it looks more like play but as the children grow as readers and writers so will the activities in each group.

Here are some pictures from today. This week is mostly focused on procedure and getting excited about the activities.

Working on Writing
Here students were practicing writing with dry erase boards.

Listen To Reading
It's important for beginning readers to listen to fluent and expressive  reading

Work with Words
This week out words are our names. The children were making play-doh names.

Read with Someone
Here student practice reading to a buddy.

Typically I have a work on Math Center as my last one. This sensory table however is always a class favorite.
This center builds math and science skills but also develops responsibility with the job of cleaning up after.

We are off to a great start and I can't wait to add different activities each week. The kids really did a great job on day one!

Rainbow Rice

I have dyed noodles for necklaces but never rice. So today I did! It was the same process as noodles....
Rainbow Rice

In a ziplock bag put some rice and food coloring (I used Neon the colors turned out awesome!) then a splash of rubbing alchohol. Then SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE.
I poured the rice out onto paper towel lined cookie sheets and let dry. Once they are COMPLETELY dry put it in a sensory table and play.

My plan is to use this as part of Daily 5 and put sight word cards in the rice and the children can hunt for either a specific word or find all the words they can. I will probably either make worksheets or have the children write the words they find. So easy but a fun way to "spice up" sight word practice.

rainbow rice (much less messy replacement for sand) measure out the rice (4 cups) and put it in a Ziploc bag with about 2T of food coloring or liquid water colors (works great!) and 3 T of rubbing alcohol. The kids can help mix the rice in the bags to spread the color. put them on pans to dry in the sun. Dries incredibly fast. Can color pasta the same way!

Listen To Reading Document

Another Project! (I have been busy today!)

One of the things I struggle with when having my students working on "Daily 5" is accountability. I don't have a listening center so I use the classroom computers when the children are "listening to reading." We use the amazing websites bookflix, storyline online or my youtube playlist of books (find it by clicking HERE or on my Pinterest page.)

But after the students listened to a story they started playing around on the computer, or I noticed them not watching a whole book and spending the time clicking away. On Pinterest I found a great worksheet, easy and concise for students to fill out after they finished listening to a story. The problem? I couldn't find it to print it anywhere. So.....I created my own! I love when other teachers/bloggers share printables so I try to pay it forward and share too. Note** Sometimes when uploading to google docs, now called google share, the font doesn't turn out correctly so let me know if you have any problems.
