Dont Judge a Book
This month we celebrated Dr. Seuss. We read his biography, and many of his books. One of the more famous books that most students had schema about was Green Eggs and Ham. One of the lessons I have been teaching in Reading Workshop has been to discover and determine why the author wrote a book or what was the lesson of the story. So we did a little project after the story. I gave each child 2 cups, each had a drink in them one looked like blue kool-aid juice and the other like muddy water. Everone assumed that the blue drink would tast delicious while the muddy drink would be disgusting....look how it turned out..
lets try the blue first.... (salt water)
Now the brown (orange juice and food color)
The lesson is...you can't judge a book by its cover!
Pasta Punctuation and More
We have been working hard on using quotation marks when writing dialog and it has been tricky! So we tried a few alternative activities...
Pasta punctuation, we used elbow macaroni to make our quotation marks.
we worded with a partner to find all of the quotes in one of our books
Even ninja's use punctuation!

Science Day
It was super science day in our classroom! Today we moved our classroom to the school Multi-Purpose room and camped there for the day. We had an all day science experience.
Our second grade science unit is about balance and weighing. We began the day talking about the Scientific method and made super scientist crowns to wear for the day.
Our first task was to balance a butterfly on a pencil.
Our science buddies helped us work through all of the experiments.
We balanced cubes on a beam by moving the fulcrum to different parts of the beam in order to get the weight distributed .
Then it was time for the arm balance
We weighed, compared and measured using objects, school supplies, and even food
We had a super science day!

Egg Project
Today we celebrated our classroom diversity and discussed how lucky we are to be able to be in class with so many different and unique friends!
Next we completed the "Egg Project" and discussed how even though the eggs were different on the outside they were the same on the inside.
The student responses were thoughtful and sincere
We listened to Dr. Martin Luther King's speech as we worked
